Lexington’s annual theatrical rite of summer in the Arboretum kicks off this week with SummerFest’s production of William Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part 1, directed by Joe Ferrell. Here’s a look at Act 1.

The costumes look terrific, the actors look interesting, and my willing suspension is absolutely destroyed by those unsightly, ugly, visible head mics slashing across everybody’s face.

Yes, I try to shoot around those as much as I can, but sometimes it’s unavoidable. It’s nice to give a get a good close-up, since so much of the audience sits so far back. But when you zoom in, those mikes do become part of the picture.

Not your fault, Rich. Everybody in the local theatre community knows my distaste for head mics…or miking an actor, in general. I’m an old curmudgeon who thinks all actors should be trained to project and hit the back wall. Of course, in a venue like the Arboretum, where there is no back wall, I suppose miking is unavoidable. I remember a few years back when, local actor (now in New York) Shayne Brakefield’s body mic went out and, to his inestimable credit as a trained pro, I could still hear him even in the back forty of the Arboretum.
