The show will go on at Dunbar

A falling prop hasn’t stopped the beat at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School.

The day after an on-stage accident injured several students in Dunbar’s opening night performance of Hairspray, Fayette County Public Schools officials announced the show will go on.

Schools spokesperson Lisa Deffendall said the incident happened during the show’s final number when a prop television that had been secured to the back of a platform fell, hitting six students performing on the platform.

There had been no problems with the piece during rehearsals, “but maybe the students on the platform were stomping a little bit harder with the excitement of opening night and it was jarred loose,” Deffendall said.

She said a risk assessment team went to the school on Wednesday and deemed the set safe for continued performances. Three of the student performers went to the hospital and the others were examined and cleared by emergency medical personnel that responded to the incident. Deffendall said all students were fine and back in school Wednesday.

The production will continue through March 20.
