    Magazine picks UK doctoral student as best sax soloist

    Venerable jazz chronicle Downbeat magazine has named University of ­Kentucky saxophonist Dieter Rice as the best soloist in the blues/pop/rock category in its annual student awards.

    Rice, a student of UK saxophone professor Miles Osland, is a native of Seattle and graduates this summer with a doctorate in saxophone performance. His winning entry was an arrangement he wrote of 6:00 by Dream Theater.
