Becky Smith was already happy to make her theatrical return to the Bluegrass directing the HarriCYN Community Theatre’s production of To Kill a Mockingbird. Then she noticed something really cool about the timing of it: The show, which opens tonight, will close on author Harper Lee’s 87th birthday, Sunday.

“Kismet,” Smith wrote of the coincidence, “gave me chills when I made that realization.”

Smith has a long history with Lexington Theatre, having a hand in the formation of several groups such as Shakespeare in the Park (which evolved into SummerFest) and the now defunct Junkyard Players and Phoenix Group Theatre both on stage and behind the scenes.

This production, at Cynthiana’s Rohs Opera House, represents Smith’s return to Central Kentucky Theatre. Performances are at 7 tonight, 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets can be purchased at Bianckes or Smith Insurors, Inc. in Cynthiana.
