The Kentucky Theatre is becoming something of a launching pad for documentaries shown on CNN.
Friday afternoon, CNN Films announced it has acquired Sole Survivor, director Ky Dickens’ film about sole survivors of commercial airline crashes, which was screened at the Kentucky Theatre July 18. The film included the first public comments from James Polehinke, the co-pilot and sole survivor of Flight 5191, which crashed after takeoff from Bluegrass Airport on Aug. 27, 2006, killing 49 people.
The announcement came the day after another CNN acquisition, Our Nixon, screened at the Kentucky, just a week before its CNN debut. The film, co-produced by University of Kentucky assistant law professor Brian L. Frye, is made up of home movies by members of President Richard M. Nixon’s staff who later went to prison for their roles in the Watergate scandal. It will show at 9 p.m. Aug. 1 on CNN.
Sole Survivor will next be seen Saturday at the Traverse City Film Festival, and after theatrical release, will be shown on CNN in early 2014.
