Derby celeb thoughts from Friday’s ‘Fallon’

I just watched Friday night’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (gotta hear the thank-you notes) Saturday, and I already see the makings of a Derby 2014 celebs list.

The lead-off guest was James Spader (bottom, photos by Lloyd Bishop for NBC), 80’s movie star and 21st century TV star, whose The Blacklist premieres Monday night on NBC. Since NBC carries the Derby, there is usually a reasonable contingent of NBC stars on Derby week red carpets. Anyway, talking about The Blacklist’s highly-anticipated status, Spader said he wanted to tamp down expectations because he would rather be a stalking horse than a favorite.

Next up was supermodel Kate Upton of Victoria’s Secret and Hardee’s ad fame, who dropped several references to her equestrian pursuits. Then she handily beat Fallon in a game of flip cup (top photo) — between the beers in that game and oyster shooters in the last segment, Fallon downed enough alcohol on-air Friday to rival Kathie Lee and Hoda.

So, with all that equine appeal, gotta say Spader and Upton would be a nice start to a Derby guest list(, Barnstables). They could also send the Knife Fight (the Esquire Network’s cooking show) guy to make some more of those oyster shooters.

BTW, best thank-you note was, thank you, Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte, for being a cup of coffee in a slutty Halloween costume.
